Top Beginner but not amateur (for the most part).

Hello everyone great site!

I am in the Nashville area and have been taking pictures for family, receptions, small weddings, etc. the usual beginner stuff.  I do however, want to create a portfolio with a few models so I might create my own website and basically take on a more professional look.

I am not actually looking to make money but enjoy taking pics and am happy being compensated for my expenses at this time as I move forward.

Obviously I don't have a studio and the rentals on them are pretty high it seems.  My question is when I am able to find a model willing to work with me it will probably be an outdoor shoot.  While I have some minimal lighting equipment I like to travel light and use natural light.

Does it make one look like a true amateur to show up for an outdoor photo session with your camera(s) alone and or a flash?  Without out the umbrellas and gear does the model think you are just some guy with a camera or do you guys travel light on occassion?

Thanks.

I just counted.  35 of the pictures in my portfolio were taken outdoors with no supplemental light, one of them a ModelInsider contest winner.  Somehow nobody laughed, and models still seem willing to work with me.

If you can produce quality results with minimal equipment, and your portfolio shows it, I don't see that it will be a problem.  If you show up with twelve assistants and a truckload of gear and produce crap, it will be a problem.  The proof is in the pictures.
