It's not a complicated fix from a technical POV, but it requires a pretty big design shift.  We're readying a massive site redesign to address a number of issues like this, and rather than doing it in pieces (complicating the process and possibly breaking things along the way) we're going to beta-test & roll out a site-wide set of upgrades & fixes soon.
