Image Size
My images over 800pixels on the long side get reduced, yet I often see those that are 100-200 pixels larger.
What gives?
Higher account levels have bigger images. I don't know why there is a 800px limit on length too, I think it is silly and frustrating. As I was writing this, that reminded me that is the reason why I haven't uploaded any more images here.
But, FWIW, the answer is if you want bigger images, you need to pony up some coin. If I had any I would have upgraded my account a long time ago.

i upload full-size images and they get resized to 800 just like the common folk. I'm pretty sure you read it wrong somewhere.

They must have removed the upgrade option, I can't find it anywhere. I swear I read it on here!

that only tells you (and I think its new) the size of the images you can upload. I upload 4000 pixel images on a side and they get resized to 800, I dont get 1200. If its not true then I have to report a bug STAT!!!!!!!
EDIT: actually I'm wrong ...you do get 1200 but only if you send a file with 1200 as a long dimension. It doesn't resize down to 1200 for bigger files. It only works if you give it a 1200xsomething image to upload in the first place.
and 1200 vertical is lame. I just tried it.

My category isn't listed on there, from what I can see.
C'mon, some MI honcho gonna make an appearance in this thread and share their wisdom?

I just noticed this, as anything in the site related Forum is never posted to the front page. I'm surprised that James never responded to this post. Guess it fell into the cracks?
I'm no site honcho, but I have had a bit of personal experience with Michael's question. In actuality, Michael and I share the same "status" as we are considered "Founders" (original members), which gives us the same goodies as paid "Insiders" accounts which we were promised. I think AVD has the same "Insider" status resulting from the "Permanent" membership he bought. I was told a while ago by James that Team Insider members such as Curtis and Kim are also accorded this "Insider" status.
The maximum 1200 pixel image size is ONLY for verticle images. I edit both my horizontals and verticle images at 1000 pixels on their longest side (as does Curtis) but only our verticle images display at 1000 pixels. For both of us our horizontal images displayed in our portfolios are all resized down to 800 pixels, while our verticles display at our original edited size of 1000 pixels. From what I can determine, the largest image size that can be currently displayed within any portfolio on MI is 800 pixels wide by 1200 pixels long.
Michael, I've noticed that none of your verticle images display at 1000 or 1200 pixels, and are resized to the standard 800 pixel max horizontal or verticle sizes. They had to manually adjust my account to change my status to "Insider" when I questioned them about display sizes AND the amount of images allowed within my portfolio a few months ago. I assume the same will have to be done for you.
I'll write James a PM and direct him to this post for his input here. As a fellow Founder you should be accorded the same priviledges as myself. From what I can determine this hasn't been done for you yet. Just an oversight, I'm sure.

Large crack? Hell, I forgot I posted this after there wasn't any official response. lol
Your right about 1000 or 1200 verticals never displaying that size, probably 'cause I don't make 'em that big.
With few exceptions, I've made verticals at 900 for the last couple of years, they don't display at that size in the POD, they always get shrunk to 800. Landscapes I make at 800, mostly due to MM.....I'd rather they be 900 also.
Which brings me to another thought. This 800 pixel width for a center playing field in websites was set years ago, when people had smaller screens & smaller screen resolution. Given the statistics I've read for the past few years, well over 50%+ viewers are set at 1600. Why haven't sites at least changed their configuration to at least 1000 now?

The way images display in the POTD's are all reduced in size, whether they be the thumbnails, or opened to be voted on. For some odd reason the horizontal images in the POTD display at larger resolutions than the vertical images do though still reduced in size.
I'd love the images to be viewed as they were originally edited and meant to be seen within the Contests, as they are now within my portfolio. The exception being my horizontal images. My b&w images are usually high contrast and look like crap (very grainy) when reduced in size. The "potd winners" are viewed reduced in size as well. Why the need for this?
I agree with Michael that it'd be great to increase the maximum pixel size of the horizontals to display at a minimum of 900 pixels and preferably at 1000 throughout the entire site, including the portfolios.
Ok, sorry I missed this. Unfortunately I can't answer ALL the questions here, as some of it is tech stuff for Chris & Dan.
Yes, there're different sizes depending on account type. Lame it might be, but our minimum is the same as "Brand X's" maximum and a few Other Modeling Places do the same thing... we give a lot away free & that seemed like a reasonable thing to tie to membership.
If you upload a 2000 pixel high image & your account allows you to have 1200 pixel high images it SHOULD resize, the system shouldn't make you upload 1200's. That's a tech issue, I have to talk to Chris & Dan.
Images over 800 pixels wide DO work, but this's a bad interface issue. We can't display images over a certain size on the PAGE without breaking the html/css for the page so you have to click the image to see it full size... but there's no way to KNOW that.
See this image for example:
http://www.modelinsider.com/inline/111878
Click anywhere on the image & it'll open up large kind of like the way you view contest images.
We obviously need something BLATANTLY obvious that pops up automatically on such images that says "Click image to see larger."
I'm gonna ping Daniel to peek at this thread, we'll start working on this.

Annnnnnnnnnnnnnnd I just went back & re-read the OP & see that Cherry was talking about CONTEST IMAGES. I do NOT know the answer to that, but I've already asked Daniel to stop by & look this over.
Sorry, everyone was talking about PORTFOLIO sizes & I got confused.

BTW, sorry for the delay answering, I generally leave the contest forums to the contest volunteers unless they tell me there's an issue.

This coming from someone I distinctly remember asking posters, did ya read the thread before you posted?
Whatever the answer, I will anxiously wait with baited breath again.

My bad. Link I had jumped me in mid-stream. Just to clarify, membership level only affects portfolio size in images, I have asked Daniel what's up with contests.
I blame it on juggling too many things today.

I thought that Michael was ORIGINALLY talking about the resolution size of the images displayed within his portfolio and that the reason his was smaller was because he had a standard membership and hadn't been granted Insider status being a Founder, as I had.
We then discussed image resolutions displayed within the contests. Sorry if I went off track.

This is in the CONTEST forum, so I am ASSUMING he's talking about contest images and NOT portfolio images. If he was talking about portfolio images then this's in the wrong place.
If his images in his portfolio aren't uploading at the right size it's a site issue 'cause he's a Founder. But I think he's talking about the contest.

OK, I did a bit of research on the image displays within the Contests and this is what I've been able to determine.
All thumbnails within the Contest display at no more than 150 pixels on any side be it vertical or horizontal. When opened, no image displays larger than 407 pixels on the vertical side, and the width varies up to roughly 650 pixels max from what I've seen with the image file being constrained.
The winning entries for the winners shown in Completed Contests for the Past Two Weeks will show at the member's largest allowable resolution during that time based on their membership "status" of up to 1200 pixels on the vertical side. However, I've seen nothing wider than 800 pixels on the horizontal side. So, AVD and AM Johnson were correct in their observation that membership status DOES make a difference in the image's display size, at least in the "past two weeks" section. Once it leaves the past two weeks the images display smaller.
If you look at Kim's winner from Nov 7th in the POTD 18+ History, it opens to only 271 by 407 pixels. Click on his POTD 18+ winners link in his portfolio and the same image opens to 800x1200 (the largest image I've seen on the site in anyone's portfolio), as he uploaded it at that size and his profile is allowed images to be viewed that large with his membership status of Insider.
Curtis and I edit our horizontal images to 1000 pixels wide and they ONLY display that large if it's been uploaded within our portfolios and then double clicked. Nothing in the POTD/POTD 18+ links within our portfolios display at more than 800 pixels on the horizontal side and none of these images can be double clicked to their original uploaded size. That size is only viewable if the image is uploaded within one's portfolio AND you're at Insider membership status.
Developer response:
Image sizes are based on account level no matter where they are uploaded. Images are resized to the longest size is this length and the other is proportionally shrunk
Free Members: 800 Pixels
Founder: 800 Pixels
Supporter: 1000 Pixels
Insiders, Team Insider, and Permanent: 1200 pixels
The limits apply to both dimensions not for aesthetic but bandwidth, and space usage, thus the reason we give more to paying members.
As for the image views: Yes there needs to be a prompt on the images if it is larger then shown. Consider it something that is rattling around in my head and I will figure something out for.
Rick, you got special consideration and bumped up your image sizes b/c of some of the helpful conversations we have had privately on how the site works and what would be helpful.
Ah, One other thing I should mention on the contests.
In the popup window for display they will not show larger then the veiwport (viewable content area) of your window. This is a limitation on the popup code we are using as it resizes them so the full image will display without scrolling.

Ok, I THOUGHT that was the case... this's likely what's causing some of the confusion between what CHerrystone & Rick see, if they're viewing on different size monitors they'll see different sizes.
I did NOT realize the membership maxes applied to the contest, that needs to be changed, contests should be a level playing field.
