Model Insider Spotlight - Tom Linkens - MI 1427

How did you get started in photography? What brought you to it?
From way back at the beginning, I was a hobbyist with a Pentax K1000 and occasionaly one time use film cameras. First digital was a Kodak C310. Started out professionally in February 2006, taking photos of Roya Hakakian at a lecture and book signing. The job was memorable, even though the pictures weren't.

Do you consider yourself: Pro, Semi Pro, Hobbyist, Amateur, Something Else?
I consider myself just barely pro. Good enough to book models, hair, and makeup from agencies. And shooting magazine spreads often enough.

How did you find Model Insider and what do you like best about it?
I first learned of it by Craig Seay promoting this website. I mostly tend to enter and vote in the contests. Not a regular on the forums, and the castings don't seem to have much to them. (ed. note, we're working on that!)

What gear do you use?
My gear is an Olympus E410, Yashica 124 Mat Film Camera, Sekonic L308 Light Meter, a pickle, and some string.

What is your usual genre? Favorite genre?
Most often Fashion is what I'm shooting. Every so often I set up an art nude photoshoot. And tragically, had to shoot the latter recently. I had rented a studio, but no team whatsoever besides the model.

How do you find models to work with?
If shooting for a magazine, I'll first head to agencies. Or set up a photoshoot with Christine Prouty. She and I have managed two editorials, and almost made it to photo of the day on Photo Vogue.

Do you provide styling and makeup? Do you work with a preferred MUA?
I'm not much of an MUA myself, without trying lol. But I do prefer booking hair and makeup from networking sites, if not from any agencies.

Where do you see yourself going in the next year, artistically and business wise?
One year from now...still shooting magazines, but hopefully better ones. Getting paid work from these tearsheets would also be a plus.

Do you shoot both in studio and on location, and do you have a preference?
I can shoot in a studio, as demonstrated three times now. But prefer shooting on location.

Do you have your own studio? If not, do you find this a limitation?
No studio of my own. That helped me to learn and prefer shooting on location.

Do you travel?
Why yes I do. It's a hobby in itself. And from Pennsylvania to New York and back for photoshoots is something I have to do, but far from hate.

Anything else you'd like to tell the Model Insiders about yourself?
I can do one better than the recent Melissa Stetten and "fucking Brian" Twitter feud. Back in 2007 during NYFW, one Udor and I joked about a comp card meaning a model wants to sleep with you. Said model "threatened" to beat Udor up, and made a very nasty comment that involved me being an "old man". Not quite sure her comment is front page friendly.
