Model Insider Spotlight - DanK - MI 8743

How did you get started in photography? What brought you to it?
I Started in college where I took a couple of photography classes. Stopped after a few years. Started again years later, I am the owner of a Contracting business and needed to take better pictures of my Kitchens and Baths for my website. Best part is that some of my equipment is tax deductible. Apart from work I started out doing landscape photography. I then decided to try my hand with Models and have enjoyed it ever since.

Do you consider yourself: Pro, Semi Pro, Hobbyist, Amateur, Something Else?
I do some paid work so I would classify myself as semi-pro.

How did you find Model Insider and what do you like best about it?
There was a thread in another photography networking site about other choices. I looked at the ones suggested and thought MI was the best set up.

What gear do you use?
I mostly use my Canon 50D with Canon 70-200 f4 lens as well as a Tamron 17-55. For studio work I have some 35year old Bogen Monolites as well as YN flashes.

What is your usual genre? Favorite genre?
I tend to do more commercial looking images but I would like to do more fashion "editorial" photographs.

How do you find models to work with?
Most of my models come from casting calls on sites like MI. I am also doing more testing with Agencies here in NY.

Do you provide styling and makeup?
I do have a MUA, Agnes Barnat (http://www.agnesbarnat.com), I am very happy with and use her as much as I can. I do not provide wardrobe styling as I have yet to find any willing to make the trip to Staten Island. I occasionally have a hairdresser.

Where do you see yourself going in the next year, artistically and business wise?
I would like to do some larger scale fashion "editorial" shoots with a full team and multiple models. I have a few themes I would like to explore. I also would like to work with more male models. It would be nice to land some more commercial business.

Do you shoot both in studio and on location, and do you have a preference?
I only have a preference in the winter. In the summer I think I need to do a bit of both to keep things interesting.

Do you have your own studio? If not, do you find this a limitation?
I do have a home studio set up I am fairly happy with. I would prefer a larger space but I make due with what I have. I have seen some amazing work done in studios much smaller then I have.

Do you travel?
I travel as much as my business will let me which isn't enough. Usually a couple of short trips a year. I limit my photography when I travel as I would rather live the moment then be a spectator.

Anything else you'd like to tell the Model Insiders about yourself?
I am originally from Montreal, Canada and have been living in NYC for 10 years now.
